Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a crucial role in the global economy, significantly contributing to employment, innovation and economic growth (Stojčić et al. in Int Bus Rev 33:102258, 2024). However, their ability to internationalise has traditionally been limited by fewer resources and capabilities compared to larger enterprises (Jiang et al. in J Int Bus Stud 53:879–901, 2022; Moreira et al. in Int J Entrep Small Bus 51:513–541, 2024). The advent of disruptive technologies such as the Internet, artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain and 3D printing has profoundly altered market dynamics (McAfee and Brynjolfsson in Machine, platform, crowd: Harnessing our digital future.
