Dynamic AFM Testing of the Roughness Parameters for Dental Materials Characterization

Dynamic atomic force microscopy testing is a powerful technique to study the microgeometry of the biomaterials. The data collected may be complementary to optical, scanning, and transmission microscopy as it provides the quantitative representation of the height profiles of the regions of interest of biological objects with the nanoscale resolution. In the present study, dynamic mode of atomic force microscopy was utilized to compare the roughness parameters of the tooth tissue surfaces with the three types of dental materials applied on the same teeth: composite resin, glass ionomer cement, and polymer infiltrant. A couple of repeating features of the dental materials as well as the artifacts of the internal structure were additionally analyzed.
