Waste management is a pressing contemporary environmental challenge, stemming from the daily generation of industrial and household waste by humans. This waste poses threats to human health, emits foul odours, and even contributes to air pollution. Inadequate waste handling practices can result in severe environmental consequences. People often hesitate to open and close trash cans due to concerns about bacterial contamination on their hands. To address these environmental issues, a smart trash bin equipped with waste sorting technology is suggested. Garbage presents environmental problems, including health risks, unpleasant odors, and potential air pollution. The proposed solution involves utilizing an ultrasonic sensor capable of detecting approaching individuals within a 50 cm range, automatically opening the bin’s lid for a 7-s duration. A stepper motor is employed to rotate the waste sorter to different positions based on the type of waste detected. For instance, if the soil moisture sensor identifies organic waste, a servo motor rotates the sorter to direct it into the organic waste bin. Likewise, if the inductive proximity sensor detects metal, the servo motor positions the sorter for metal recycling. A camera module captures images of the waste, employing a CNN algorithm for waste categorization. Once classified, the servo motor guides the sorter to the appropriate bin. This system streamlines waste sorting, enhancing accuracy. The separated waste is stored in dedicated compartments within the bin, reducing landfill contributions. Organic waste can be processed to produce biogas, serving kitchen needs. Additionally, the system can automatically alert cleaners when the bin is full, mitigating overflow issues and odours. This proposed smart trash bin holds promise as a valuable tool for waste management, applicable in both public and private settings.
