This chapter explores the criminalization of three drugs that are legal in most places around the world and that are not classified under any international drug treaty schedules. The first one is a tea prepared with coca leaves. The second one is tobacco, a drug that is legal in the vast majority of the world, albeit subject to government restrictions that vary from country to country. In particular, we will be paying attention to the prohibition of tobacco in the Kingdom of Bhutan. The goal here will be to understand how and why Bhutan took the unprecedented step (at least unprecedented in modern days) of banning the sale and purchase of tobacco products, along with prohibiting the consumption of tobacco in public places. Lastly, we will provide a survey overview of alcohol prohibition around the world, with a particular focus on countries that operate under Shari’a law.
