Social media have changed the ways in which information is presented and people are connected. Ideationally, people’s inner and outer experiences are differently construed through “technologically mediated resources” such as linguistic, visual and audial semiotic modes (Poulsen et al. 2018: 594). Interpersonally, social relationships are differently forged through the online social behaviors of likes, reposts and comments via the Web 2.0 technical support (Zappavigna 2019). In other words, social media users become more active with multi-semiotic selections and interactive performances in the many-to-many media-audience mode than the passive recipients of information by means of the one-way mass media channels including newspapers, broadcast and TV programs. In the new media era, Busch and Pfisterer (2011) suggest that “present media reception is more characterized by individual practices” (p. 14). For example, social media provide a virtual venue where users can read the news, share emotions and exchange opinions in a news package (see Sect. 4.1.6 , p. 63). All these news reading activities lead to changes of the relationship between news text and reader, which are the concern of the current study.
