Literature and fiction make it possible to create a wide variety of future scenarios. Ready Player One features a new, memorable world that shifts between physical reality and virtual reality while creating a new social space. The use of a virtual reality called OASIS produces a chance to escape the dystopian seeming physical reality and to dive into the utopian cyberspace. Yet with the possibility to indulge in Sehnsuchtslandschaften (longing for a more desirable world), the boundaries between what could be described as utopian and what is dystopian become blurred. Increasingly, a hybrid space is emerging that incorporates aspects of the physical and virtual worlds. People change this cyberspace to suit their wishes and adapt it to their needs and ultimately try to escape the desolate living conditions in the physical world. They find themselves in a space between utopia and dystopia.
