Challenges in Establishing Sustainable Innovations to Conserve Marine Resources
摘要
Marine assets are defined as the biological and physical components that reside in the oceans and seas and benefit society significantly. Their proper management and wise utilization are key to establishing the conservation and sustainability of marine resources. The oceanic ecosystem is one of the most diversified ecosystems on this planet. Our understanding and conservation strategies are mainly focused on terrestrial ecosystems. Less attention is given to conserving marine ecosystems. Oceans are valuable resources for humanity. They have a significant role in assuring food security, coastal protection, and climate regulation. However, overexploitation of many marine ecosystems leads to permanent destruction, creating a significant threat to the existence of marine as well as terrestrial ecosystems. Many anthropogenic activities are accelerating the destruction of biodiversity and contaminating marine environments. Some preservation strategies exist to protect valuable endangered marine ecosystems. However, there are many obstacles, including lack of information and data, challenges with surveillance and regulation, contamination hazards, and insufficient funding. This chapter highlights the significant barriers and difficulties to conserving marine resources and possible approaches to developing and executing practical marine resource conservation approaches.
