The concept of sustainable development, as articulated by the Commission on Environment and Development, entails meeting present needs while safeguarding the ability of future generations to fulfill their own. The importance of empowering women, ensuring their full participation, and promoting equality as core elements for peace and sustainable development was underscored during the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in September 1995. Central to achieving gender equity is empowering women and girls, which entails enabling them to take charge of their lives. This empowerment is intricately linked to sustainable development, which relies on an equitable distribution of resources. Gender equity as a concept thus becomes essential to sustainable development. It involves fair allocation of resources, programs, and decision-making without discrimination, addressing imbalances in benefits for all genders. The UN Population Fund stresses that empowered women are catalysts for social change within and beyond the household. Achieving and maintaining gender equality necessitates closing the gender gap and establishing a level playing field between women and men, with women’s empowerment as a fundamental requirement. At the 2015 Sustainable Development Summit, member states of the United Nations embraced the 2030 Agenda with 17 SDGs, acknowledging women’s contributions to sustainable development, especially in education and child-rearing, as essential. To harness the potential of women as drivers of sustainable development, it is essential to emancipate their roles within the family, community, and society from sociocultural and religious limitations. This liberation can only be realized through the principle of equity. This chapter aims to construct a conceptual framework that incorporates gender equality as a fundamental metric for attaining global sustainability.
