This chapter begins by examining the things journalists do that may cause the audience to lose trust in journalists and the news they produce. The journalists we interviewed offered many reasons that fell into these two broad categories: (1) portraying the news as negative, and (2) failing to relate to the community. In the latter part of the chapter, they offered strategies to combat these self-inflicted issues to rebuild trust with the community. These strategies included: (1) building relationships with community members, (2) being transparent with the audience, and (3) newsrooms reflecting the communities they serve.
