E-Learning Practices of Journalism Education in Nigerian Higher Education Institutions: Conceptual Context and Challenges
摘要
Information and communication technology advances have had an impact on many areas of Nigeria, including education, and have left gaps in the country’s journalistic training programmes. Even though e-learning techniques are a well-established worldwide norm, Nigerian institutions offering journalism programmes still struggle to find qualified instructors and digital learning resources. The diffusion of innovation theory emphasises the importance of early adopters of e-learning in journalism. This chapter explores e-learning practices and the challenges related to journalism education in Nigeria through literature analysis and interviews with a small number of journalism instructors. Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) is used as the scientific research methodology. The chapter argues that most journalism training institutes have not changed their traditional teaching methods due to various obstacles, including low levels of confidence with the technology among journalism lecturers, low student participation, and a lack of technology infrastructure for journalism and media courses. While government and owner involvement are awaited, one suggestion is for journalism academics to enhance their technological proficiency.
