This critically reflective chapter starts by emphasising the impacts of empathetic policy design practices, and how these differ from conventional approaches. It explores criticisms of epistemological paradox regarding the articulation of different modes of rationality, particularly technical and emotional types of knowing. It considers the criticism that empathetic policy design might contribute only at the agency level. The chapter discusses the possibility of moving from building a sentimental mindsetSentimental mindset to a collective, empathetic imagination that could challenge existing social systems and even power relationsPower relations. It ends by pointing out that the process and methods can harness contexts and situations, and promote a policy to care rather than a policy to control.
