Plant breeding programmes target production of new varieties which excel in some defined characters as compared to the existing varieties and that each new variety must be distinct from the already existing cultivars and other new varieties in at least one character. Before decision is made for release of the new variety and its seed multiplied for distribution the breeder conducts tests to compare it with other established varieties and to verify the superiority, worthiness in terms of value, uniqueness and distinctiveness of the new variety.
