Patient education is essential in all aspects of medicine and surgery, but it is uniquely important in the setting of hepatic artery infusion (HAI) pump placement and chemotherapy. In addition to routine education on surgery and chemotherapy, HAI treatment has several nuances that are critically important to discuss with patients. For example, patients must understand their diagnosis, treatment options, and the risks and potential complications of the treatments; but they also must be aware of the unique logistical implications, risks, and limitations of HAI treatment. Lastly, lack of adequate education or noncompliance with recommendations can lead to pump failure or severe complications including liver failure and death. This information must be conveyed to patients regardless of their medical literacy and successfully provided during potentially stressful oncologic consultations. In this chapter, we will review these important considerations when developing a patient education program for HAI pump placement and subsequent chemotherapy.

摘要
