It is well known that Mexico has high levels of insecurity, corruption and violence due to the consolidation of criminal groups dedicated to different types of illegal trafficking and government corruption. This chapter reflects on the challenges and vulnerabilities of academic research in green criminology in violent contexts like Mexico in the Global South. It explores the risks for conducting criminological studies about environmental harms and crimes in the context of violence and insecurity caused by the consolidation of criminal groups, corruption and armed clashes between criminal groups and security forces in Mexico. The chapter illustrates how many environmental crimes are often related to other forms of criminality in the country. This chapter draws upon research experiences (methodological approach, access to information and data collection in fieldwork) to ensure safety, ethical and methodological consistency in studies of environmental crimes and harms in this region that place criminological researchers in conditions of vulnerability.
