Overfishing, pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change threaten marine ecosystems unprecedentedly. As these pressures continue to mount, marine ecosystems become more vulnerable to collapse, which could have disastrous effects on the millions of people who depend on them for their food, livelihoods, and cultural identity. In this context, marine protected areas (MPAs) have been established as a promising tool for conserving biodiversity, supporting sustainable fisheries, and building resilience to the impacts of climate change. In this chapter, we explore how MPAs can enhance resilience to climate change, review the research articles supporting this role, and provide examples from real-world case studies. It is worth mentioning that using MPAs as a strategy for coping with climate change has challenges and opportunities addressed in this chapter. Suggestions for future research and management initiatives were also provided. Ultimately, this book chapter aims to contribute to a better understanding of the crucial role that MPAs can play in constructing climate resilience and hitting the 30 × 30 target for biodiversity.
