Since 2015, the role of the European Union (EU) in Serbia’s domestic migration, asylum, and refugee protection systems has grown significantly. This occurred in the process of Serbia’s accession to the EU, while formal negotiations about Serbia’s accession started in 2014. Serbian institutions refugee reception asylum and migration management systems are propped up by EU support and funding, and Serbian asylum and migration policy, legislative and field practices are aligned with the EU incentives accordingly. The purpose of the paper is to evaluate the scope of EU policy, legal and financial instruments of support to Serbia related to asylum and migration, their purpose, and their effects, and to evaluate their alignment with the EU and international human rights and refugee law, as well as to evaluate their alignment with the principles of UN Global Compact on Refugees.
