Towards an Expanded Approach to Cultural Value Through Artists’ Self-Organisation: Indigenous Art Centres, Artist Collectives and Artist Run Initiatives
摘要
This chapter considers expanded understandings of value in the visual arts sector with a focus on artists’ self-organisation. In seeking to better understand and measure intangible forms of cultural value in the visual arts sector, we look to three paradigmatic organisational structures: Indigenous Art Centres, artist collectives and artist run initiatives. The chapter begins by defining cultural value as a set of principles that inform a way of life, as opposed to the market-oriented focus on economic value that dominates the cultural industries. The focus then turns to consider three case studies as examples of alternative ‘cultural value ecologies’ that focus on forms of collectivising to share cultural value through both process and outcome.
