Each year, millions of tons of plastic waste (cups, hand gloves, food ampules, bags, and bottles) are disposed of after use. These large sums of waste are a result of the ever-increasing human population, whose need for plastic is evolving daily. During the COVID-19 era, the amount of plastic usage increased beyond what was generated daily and also impacted the composition and quantity of municipal waste. These wastes are composed of contaminated blood, spume, and saliva materials from humans that are pathogens. Because of the potential for these wastes to be transferred via contact (inhalation and dermal). There have been several methods used in the management of plastic waste. However, studies have shown that they are not very effective in managing COVID-19 waste. So, there is a need to establish a sustainable method to contain this waste to forestall any probable health risk. Hence, this chapter intends to assess the current method(s) in the management and disposal of plastic waste during the COVID-19 pandemic era. Several plastic wastes and their strategic management were discussed. Plastic pollution threats during the COVID-19 era were highlighted. Types of plastic waste and their management were discussed. Biomedical plastic waste during the pandemic and ways of managing it were discussed. The findings of this study showed that mixing plastics with concentrates of tar for road construction, liquefaction, pyrolysis, and recycling are the most efficient and sustainable methods of its management. These will enhance road structure and reduce the effects of greenhouse gases. For biomedical plastic wastes, it is recommended that segregation, recycling, decontamination of used PPEs, and co-processing of the biological wastes in cement furnaces be important in the management of the wastes.
