Higher education institutions (HEIs) plan and develop programs to enhance their internationalization through student and faculty mobility; however, economic, language, and cultural barriers are some of the reported challenges in mobilizing faculty and students. This qualitative study explores the experience of incorporating Language Exchange (LE), also known as Tandem, into an English Conversation Club program of an Ecuadorian public university. LE was explored as a strategy for the internationalization of this university through the interaction of the university community with native and non-native speakers of the target language. The LE experience consisted of nine face-to-face sessions, facilitated by an instructor. This study employed open-ended questions to gather information from 95 attendees of the LE sessions. A thematic analysis of the responses highlights some aspects and pitfalls of this experience as per the voice of the participants. This study suggests LE as a good strategy for providing greater exposure to the target language in a relaxed, cooperative, and intercultural environment. It also fosters vocabulary acquisition, speaking skills, intercultural competence, and collaborative and autonomous learning. This article concludes with recommendations to transfer face-to-face LE into a virtual environment as a good post-pandemic strategy to enhance the internationalization of HEIs.
