Examination of the nose should always start with careful history-taking. The surgeon should use patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and similar questionnaires to standardize the consultation. Additional questioning should follow when PROMS are not sufficiently detailed. Inspection, palpation, anterior rhinoscopy, and endoscopic examination should be performed, with findings noted in the patient’s chart. Functional diagnostic tests are not used routinely but are used more for clinical research. Computerized tomography or cone beam tomography is very helpful for obtaining more information about the condition of the nose and paranasal sinuses and should be part of the preoperative consultation.

Examination of the nose should always start with careful history-taking. The surgeon should use patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and similar questionnaires to standardize the consultation. Additional questioning should follow when PROMS are not sufficiently detailed. Functional diagnostic tests are not used routinely but are used more for clinical research. Computerized tomography or cone beam tomography is very helpful for obtaining more information about the condition of the nose and paranasal sinuses and should be part of the preoperative consultation.
