This chapter introduces political risk insurance and provides a brief overview of each following chapter. Foreign investments are essential to the global economic system, providing developing or less-developed countries with the means to benefit from capital and technology transfers. In exchange, these countries often offer cheap, and in some cases, skilled labor, as well as access to natural resources. While some perceive engaging in such business as a good-faith effort to balance economies, transfer know-how and mitigate migration, others perceive it as exploiting the host country’s resources.
