Wherever people live together, there will be leadersleader and followers—some men dominating, and others submitting. The superordination of persons and groups and the subordinationsubordination of other persons and groups are characteristics of communal life. In one sense, the leadersleader in the prison community are the officials as they dominate and control the situation. But at this juncture, we are interestedleaderinterest source in the phenomena of leadership among prisoners and not the despotic leadership of officialdomofficialdom. Authorities in the penitentiary do not officially recognize any inmates as leadersleader. They are aware, of course, that certain personalities have leadership qualitiesleaderqualities of and this knowledge is of valuevalues in executive dealings. Leadership results from relationshipsrelationshipsand leaders among people. Various types of leadership exist according to the intensity of positive, personal relations and the structure of the societysociety or community. Leaders, of course, are not isolated but exist only as the function of groupleaderfunction of groups life.
