The second chapter of this book attempted to summarize the culture conditioningguardsand conditioning of our inmates. The third chapter continued this theme and set forth in broad terms the personality equipment of the men in prison. In this chapter, we wishwish to observe the formal organization of the community in which the personalities thus conditioned live. It is a perspective and a bird’s eye view of the total situation, which is now in order so that the subsequent chapters may be interpreted in relation to the total situation. We are for the moment interested in such facts as the survey type of study reveals.
