For years, scientists and environmental activists have been desperately trying to convince the global public, politicians, and big business that an early decarbonization of the global energy system is crucial in slowing rapidly accelerating global warming and climate change. Nevertheless, due to the steady growth of the world’s population and the strong socioeconomic and political inertia of modern human society, the world appears in no hurry to reduce global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a meaningful way. This is especially true for energy-related carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel sources—coal, oil, biofuels, and natural gas. Instead of decreasing rapidly, these emissions are projected to actually slightly increase globally over the next 2–3 decades. The obvious result of further GHG emissions will be even more climate warming.
