In this chapter, we have focused on the benefits of the usage of activated carbon in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) for microplastic removal. Activated carbon can be integrated into existing treatment processes with minimal modifications, providing a versatile and scalable solution. Its high adsorption capacity ensures the effective removal of a wide range of microplastic sizes and types, enhancing overall water quality. Additionally, the potential for regeneration and reuse of activated carbon can reduce operational costs and environmental impacts. The production of activated carbon is energy-intensive and can be costly, which might limit its widespread adoption. Moreover, the disposal or regeneration of spent activated carbon requires careful management to prevent secondary pollution. Ensuring consistent quality and performance of activated carbon across different batches and sources is also crucial for maintaining treatment efficacy.
