This chapter offers a brief tour of the scientific underpinnings of the Manhattan Project, including the basic properties of atoms, nuclei, isotopes, the process of nuclear fission, and touches on some the challenges faced by Manhattan Project scientists and engineers in developing the first generation of nuclear weapons.
