Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nails, most commonly caused by dermatophytes and rarely by non-dermatophyte molds (NDMs) and yeasts. It is the most frequently encountered nail disorder in clinical practice. Onychomycosis predominantly affects the toenails, most commonly the great toenail(s), and there is a strong association with tinea pedis [1–3]. There are several onychomycosis subtypes, with distal lateral subungual onychomycosis (DLSO) being the most common (87%) [4]. Other types include superficial white onychomycosis (SWO), proximal subungual onychomycosis (PSO), total dystrophic onychomycosis (TDO), and fungal melanonychia (FM) [2].
