Onychopapilloma is a common benign tumor involving the nail bed and nail matrix [1]. It was first described in 1995 by Baran and Perrin, at which time it was labeled “localized multinucleate distal keratosis,” and later named “onychopapilloma” by the same authors in 2000 [2, 3]. Pathologically, these tumors are composed of layered subungual hyperkeratosis at the distal nail edge extending past the hyponychium, epidermal hyperplasia, and nail bed matrix metaplasia, with or without multinucleate keratinocytes and focal hemorrhage [4–8]. Onychopapilloma is typically painless, although patients may present with concerns about cosmetic appearance or interference with daily activities, including the nail catching on clothes or difficulty picking up or manipulating objects [4].
