In this chapter we introduce the basics of natural language processing techniques that are important to systematically analyze language data. In particular, we will utilize simple large language models and showcase examples of how to apply them in science education research contexts. We will also point to recently advanced large language models that are capable of solving problems without further training, which opens up novel potentials (and challenges) for science education research.
