On March 14, 1879, a baby was born in the old town of Ulm in southern Germany. The father named his first child Albert. This was an ordinary child with an ordinary name. The letter A of Albert was the same as in Abraham, the name of his grandfather. This was a common, old Jewish tradition to commemorate the family lineage (Fig. 1.1).
