In this chapter I will offer a brief biography of Dion Fortune and explore her initiatory mission. Reflecting on her relationship with her contemporaries and predecessors, I will consider how Fortune understood her own work, and how the Aquarian New Age provided the cosmological foundation for her aim to create a more egalitarian access point to initiation than was provided by the various occult societies operating in the period. I will also introduce some of the key elements of Fortune’s approach to initiation, including the use of archetypes, the imagination, and the occult Kabbalah. I will discuss the interwar occult publishing climate and its impact on Fortune’s work and explain why it is difficult to evaluate the success of Fortune’s claims about the initiatory power of her texts.
