In this chapter I will delve deeper into Fortune’s adaptation of Jungian concepts in Moon Magic. Having already established the centrality of the anima for the text, I will turn now to consider the role of mother goddess and dark goddess figures in the initiation process. I will explore Fortune’s rejection of the popular association of divine femininity with motherhood, and her presentation of the Occult Mother as an initiatrix. I will argue that, in Moon Magic, Fortune presents the divine feminine as incorporating a darkness, associated with both the unconscious and immorality, which is necessary for man’s initiation and development. It is only by descent to, and acceptance of, the monstrous, amoral goddess Black Isis, that the novel’s protagonist is able to experience initiation, and find healing and rejuvenation.
