Extreme events, such as winter storms and hurricanes, are low-probability but high-impact weather occurrences that have caused significant economic losses and widespread power outages. Resilience refers to the ability to prepare for, absorb, adapt to, and rapidly recover from such adverse events. Efforts to improve distribution system resilience can be classified into three main categories: long-term resilience planning, pre-event preparation, and post-event restoration. Long-term resilience planning, also known as Resilience-Oriented Design (ROD), involves making strategic investments in grid hardening and restoration components to strengthen the system against future disruptions. Pre-event preparation includes mobilizing crews and equipment in anticipation of extreme weather, ensuring that resources are ready for rapid deployment. Post-event restoration focuses on restoring power systems quickly and securely, with the goal of minimizing the impact on customers. This chapter examines utility practices and research within these three categories, and introduces approaches taken by large, medium, and small utilities. It provides valuable insights into how utilities can effectively prepare for and respond to extreme weather events, while offering recommendations for enhancing resilience in the future.
