Introduction

The electric power grid is one of the most critical infrastructures supporting modern society. While people can conveniently obtain electricity by plugging their appliances into a power outlet, the underlying power grid, which delivers electricity converted from various energy sources to customers, is a complex engineering network encompassing generation, transmission, and distribution systems that have evolved over more than a century. The difficulty of operating power grids is magnified during extreme events, such as the large-scale outage during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. This underscores the need to understand grid resilience and to enhance it effectively and efficiently. This chapter provides an introductory discussion on grid resilience and enhancement measures.
