While Milton Reinvented focuses on Milton’s presence in the nineteenth century, his presence in twentieth-century and contemporary America demonstrate how his writings remain relevant. We see how Milton is recovered, even redeemed, by scholars emphasizing historical scholarship in response to T. S. Eliot and F. R. Leavis (detractors of Milton) and the ahistorical New Criticism. After 9/11, Milton’s Paradise Lost and Samson Agonistes were invoked in an effort to make sense of that tragedy. In recent years, numerous books and articles have been published on “Why Milton Matters,” to demonstrate ways his writings provide timeless and timely truths about our world. The end of this discussion makes clear the implication of Milton Reinvented—that Milton’s work (liberty of conscience, of religion, of truth-seeking, the necessary separation of church and state), continues to engage us because these issues remain our present concerns.
