Patients with significantly impaired or absent corneal innervation can develop a degenerative corneal disease termed neurotrophic keratopathy. Corneal neurotization presently represents the only definitive treatment option by surgically rerouting sensory donor nerve fibers to the anesthetic cornea and thereby restoring corneal sensation and ocular surface health. Commonly used donor nerves include the supraorbital and supratrochlear nerves due to their proximity to the eye, minimal donor site morbidity, and reliable ophthalmic outcomes.
