Ultrasound (US) is commonly used for the diagnosis and localization of many nerve entrapments and injuries. Advantages over magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) include high spatial resolution imaging of superficial nerves and dynamic imaging of nerve subluxations. Additionally, there are virtually no contraindications to US, and there is less extensive imaging artifact from metals as occurs with many orthopedic implants and shrapnel. US is also widely available, with a relatively low cost and a well-suited imaging modality for guiding procedures such as perineural injections (nerve blocks), preoperative wire localizations, and nerve ablation.
