Sensory nerve transfers are a useful adjunct in restoring function to the upper extremity, as an insensate limb can be prone to injuries, and is rarely used even after motor restoration. Sensory nerve transfers have been described for isolated high median, radial, and ulnar nerve injuries, brachial plexus injuries, and in cases of tetraplegia. The primary goal of sensory nerve transfers is to provide protective sensation to the injured limb. In this chapter, we will discuss strategies and techniques for sensory restoration.
