The common peroneal (fibular) nerve is one of the main branches of the sciatic nerve. It provides motor supply to the anterior and lateral leg, as well as the dorsum of foot. It also provides sensory supply to the dorsum of foot. Injury results in foot drop with preserved inversion unless concomitant involvement of the tibial nerve. Prognosis is better with nerve entrapment and ganglion cysts. Traumatic injuries of the peroneal nerve do not recover so well and can be treated by nerve grafting, nerve transfers, or tendon transfers.
