There are two nervi subscapulares: superior and inferior. The n. subscapularis superior originates from the posterior cord, also known in anatomical terminology as posterior fascicle, and goes toward the superior and mid portions of the subscapularis muscle. The n. subscapularis inferior is classically described coming off the posterior cord, but it can also originate from the axillary nerve; it travels caudally toward the inferior border of the subscapularis muscle, posterior to the subscapular vessels, innervating the inferior portion of the subscapularis and the teres major.
