Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) are quickly becoming one of the best practices in higher education. In CUREs, faculty and students work side-by-side in class to investigate scientific questions where the answer is still unknown to the scientific community at large. In essence, students participating in CUREs are performing authentic research, without necessarily joining a research laboratory in an official capacity. When combined with CRISPR-based technologies, CUREs provide powerful opportunities not only to engage students with meaningful research experience, but also build familiarity and competence with emerging technologies. In this chapter, you will learn about establishing a CURE by defining the differences between CUREs and other labs with inquiry components, important considerations on the development and deployment of CUREs, how CRISPR has and can be used successfully in a CURE, and finally how to assess student learning in a CRISPR-based CURE.
