The chapter delves into the effects of colonialism and its authoritarianism on natural resource exploitation in Africa. The study examines the colonial motive for natural resource exploitation and discusses how that motive has defined past and present natural resource exploitation practices and the extent to which the erstwhile colonialists continue to extract resources from the African continent. The author submits that the traits of natural resources, including what they are, the role they play in the socio-economic and political contexts of a given country, and their tendency to catalyse dispute, are principally mechanisms of the structures, laws, and practices that regulate the management of these resources, especially the dispersion of entitlement and prospects from them.
