In this chapter, we give a brief overview of the theory of simulation modeling. The focus is on simulation methodologies—both in general and specific methodological theory that we leverage repeatedly throughout the book. After reading this chapter, one will be able to: Classify the type of system which is being simulated (Sects. 1.2–1.3). Delineate the components of a computer simulation (Sect. 1.3). Appreciate the landscape of business process simulation software suites and vendors (Sect. 1.4). Understand what is required of input data analysis (Sect. 1.5), including input parameter optimization (Sect. 1.9).
