ICELab, a Prototype Module for Environmental Scientists. A Joint Project of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany and the Universidad de Concepción (UdeC), Chile

The article discusses the challenges of population growth in cities and rural areas and proposes non-invasive architectural strategies that can react to local conditions and enable inhabitation in remote regions. The interdisciplinary team at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) explored the possibilities and limits of building under extreme climatic conditions through case studies in Morocco’s Sahara Desert and Tierra del Fuego in Chile. The choice of materials plays a crucial role in meeting complex climatic requirements with simple means, largely dispensing with technical compensation measures. The ICELab project in Patagonia aimed to create a synergy between advanced technologies and local, low-key strategies for optimized adaptation to the specific circumstances of the location. The building serves as both a laboratory and a temporary dwelling for natural scientists, as well as a compact research station for studying changes in the climate. This article highlights the importance of territorial conditions in shaping settlement characteristics and non-invasive building strategies for a particular site, which involve the environment and serve as a catalyst for the development of local construction knowledge.
