In achieving sustainable development, it is essential to ensure that economic growth does not come at the expense of environmental protection and vice versa. A harmonious balance between the two is crucial. This study explores the dynamic relationship between environmental sustainability and economic development in the Western Balkans, focusing on CO2 emissions and gross domestic product (GDP) per capita growth. Through rigorous econometric analysis, including VAR modeling, unit root tests, and Granger causality tests, the study uncovers a significant bidirectional causality between CO2 emissions and GDP per capita growth. Policy interventions are required to mitigate CO2 emissions and promote renewable energy deployment for long-term economic sustainability. The study suggests investing in renewable energy infrastructure, promoting energy efficiency, and fostering multilateral cooperation. These measures promise sustainable development and resilient economies while preserving the environment.

摘要
