While cognitive decline is a normal aging process, accelerated neurophysiological aging or Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRDs) are on the rise. ADRDs have both similar neurophysiological underpinnings and unique aspects that culminate in varying cognitive and behavioral symptoms. Clinically, cognitive and behavioral diagnostic criteria are always considered, while research includes physiological aspects as well. This chapter reviews the neurophysiological changes associated with ADRDs as well as highlights multiple peripheral physiological factors that can increase the risk for and alter the pathogenesis of ADRDs. Finally, ADRDs are discussed from the whole human health perspective, emphasizing the psychosocial effects on the individual with ADRD and their close social network.
