Sleep Disorders due to Antipsychotics Agents

Antipsychotic drugs are indispensable for managing a range of psychological conditions, yet their therapeutic benefits are often accompanied by significant disruptions in sleep patterns. This chapter examines the complex link between antipsychotic use and sleep disorders, highlighting potential management strategies. Authors begin by addressing the prevalence of sleep disturbances among individuals receiving antipsychotic treatment, encompassing both insomnia, characterized by difficulties initiating or maintaining sleep, and excessive daytime sleepiness, impairing wakefulness. Emphasis is placed on the adverse impact of these disturbances on overall well-being and treatment adherence. Furthermore, authors explore the mechanisms through which antipsychotics influence sleep, including their interactions with neurotransmitter systems such as dopamine and histamine, known to modulate sleep parameters. Additionally, the team compare the effects of conventional and atypical antipsychotics on sleep architecture and organization of sleep stages. In addition to common sleep problems, specific sleep disorders associated with antipsychotic usage are examined, including restless leg syndrome, intermittent limb movement disorder, and sleepwalking.
