Neuroimaging of Reward Processing in Anxiety and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety disorders are highly prevalent pathologies. These conditions have been studied in relation to reward processing, as individuals with these disorders often exhibit cognitive rigidity and encounter difficulty in decision-making. Numerous neuroimaging studies have investigated the neurobiological mechanisms underlying both anxiety disorders and OCD. In anxiety disorders, the amygdala plays a pivotal role. For OCD, research suggests that structural and functional alterations in the cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuit (CSTC) contribute to obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Regarding reward processing, neuroimaging studies have identified the involvement of the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and parietal cortex. Focusing on neuroimaging of anxiety and reward processing, the prefrontal cortex appears to be altered. In the case of OCD, studies suggest functional and connectivity changes in both the frontal and striatal regions. This chapter aims to explore and discuss the neuroimaging studies conducted on anxiety disorders and OCD in the context of reward processing.
