Neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) is a significant public health concern due to the rising prevalence of opioid use disorder among pregnant women. NOWS is characterized by various symptoms, including gastrointestinal, autonomic, respiratory, and central nervous system (CNS) disturbances. Amplitude integrated EEG (aEEG) is a non-invasive technique used to monitor brain activity in neonates. This review explores the clinical presentation, neurobiology, and aEEG findings and briefly discusses neurodevelopmental outcomes in NOWS. Prenatal opioid exposure may lead to structural brain abnormalities, altered sleep-wake cycles, and seizures in neonates. aEEG can play a vital role in assessing seizures and sleep-related disturbances in NOWS.
