Intimate Partner Violence Leading to Stroke and Mental Health Challenges
摘要
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a devastating public health crisis with massive implications for the well-being of survivors. One in three women report experiencing IPV in their lifetime, showcasing the commonality. Furthermore, these numbers are presumably underreported, meaning the scope of the problem is likely much greater than what is currently understood. Physical IPV is known to cause brain injury (BI) in >80% of survivors. A growing body of research is extending IPV-caused BI to encapsulate IPV-caused stroke resulting from non-fatal strangulation (NFS). A complex set of anatomical and physiological systems are involved in cases of BI, NFS, and stroke. Additionally, these all have implications on mental health. These experiences and their effects interact with diverse, overlapping comorbidities that further complicate the mental health consequences of IPV, BI, NFS, and stroke.
